Translit is a method of encoding Non-Latin (e.g. Cyrillic, Arabic, Indic and so on) letters with Latin ones. The term "translit" stems from transliteration, a method used by translators to "translate" otherwise untranslatable words such as names or geographical locations. Initially translit was applied only within Russian speaking community (known as "Russian translit") to transliterate Cyrillic texts and later was widely applied to many other Non-Latin languages and alphabets.

Nowadays the translit practice is still widely used to transcribe letters for Internet communication by speakers of Non-Latin languages in the environments, where Latin computer keyboards are commonly used. As network technologies became more Unicode-compatible the use of translit generally became considered a bad and even unacceptable practice among users, sometimes to a point where writing in translit was restricted in public forums and discussion boards.

In attempt to support multilingual Internet users this online translit service has been created. Initially the translit service targeted only Russian speaking WWW community by providing online English to Russian translit ("Translit Ru-En") conversion and covering only Russian alphabet. Currently the translit service is actively applying it's functionality to transliterate on-the-fly other languages and alphabets different from Cyrillic.

More information about translit and transliteration methods are available on Wikipedia: Translit article & Transliteration article.
